India’s off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Sunday became the fastest bowler to claim 250 Test wickets as Bangladesh were bowled out for 388 on day four of the one-off Test in Hyderabad.
“It was a delight to bowl in the second innings. I was a little rusty in the first innings, got into a better rythm in the second innings straightaway bowling with the new ball,” Ashwin said after the enf of the fourth day’s play on Sunday.
Ashwin achieved the milestone in his 45th match by taking the final wicket of the innings- Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim for a fighting century in Hyderabad. The hosts, who made 687 for six declared in their first innings, did not enforce the follow-on despite being 299 runs ahead and had reached one without loss at lunch.
Rahim led Bangladesh’s resistance for nearly three sessions with his patient 127 before becoming the 250th Test vctim of the 30-year-old. Ashwin who surpassed Australia paceman Dennis Lillee’s record. Lillee took 48 matches to reach the same mark. Ashwin, who made his debut against the West Indies in 2011, is currently the top-ranked Test bowler in the International Cricket Council (ICC) ratings.
The off spinner and fellow slow bowler Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets apiece while paceman Umesh Yadav took three for 84 for India, who are the world’s top-ranked Test team. The visitors, who started the day on 322 for six, lost overnight batsman Mehedi Hasan (51) the first over.
Ashwin created record of claiming 250 Test wickets in least number of matches in his 45th test, eclipsing legendary Australian fast bowler Dennis Lillee.
Ashwin has had an outstanding home season where he claimed 55 wickets in 8 Test matches in 2016 calendar year while the off-spinner claimed 17 wickets in India’s tour of West Indies.His enormous form continued against England where he took 28 wickets in the five-match Test series while in the three matches he played against New Zealand, Ashwin claimed 27 wickets.
